Zhejiang University, Zheda for short, is one of the earliest and most well known universities in China, continuing the work of “Qiushi , Respecting the Truth” College founded in 1897. As the school motto, Qiushi has lasted until today. Honored by the British scholar Li Yuese as “Oriental Cambridge”, it’s one of the first schools listed in the national 211 Project and 985 Plan. Now the president is Professor Yang Wei.

The school lies in the famous historical and cultural city Hangzhou, China. With Suzhou and Shanghai in the North, Yonggan in the East and Fujian and Guangdong in the South, Hangzhou is the important city in Yangtze delta on the coastal line of southeastern China.

With preferable natural environment and first-class facilities, it’s an ideal place for students. Taking up an area of more than 5.53 square km, it has been divided into 6 districts as Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Hubin, Zhijiang and Zijingang respectively at different locations of this city. 

During its 100 years, a great number of experts and scholars with outstanding accomplishments have emerged. Among them there are Chen Duxiu, the early leader of CCP and Shao Piaoping, a pioneer and media heavy of Chinese press field, the first researcher on antibiotic of China Wang Qiu. Besides, scientist Zhu Kezhen, economist, educationist Ma Yinchu, mathematician Su Buqing, physicist and father of atomic bomb Qian Sanqiang, artists Chang Shuhong and Feng Zikai, etc. It is impossible to make a list for there are too many.

The school has convened an elite group made up of academicians of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and CAE (Chinese Academy of Engineering), and a contingent of renowned scholars as subject leaders. Of the over 8400 faculty members for the time being, there are 12 academician of CAS, 9 of CAE. There are More than 44,000 full-time students, with postgraduates 17,000. As well, it has attracted more than 1,200 foreign students here.

To build it into an international university, the school invites hundreds of foreign experts and scholars giving lectures or exchanging ideas every year. In 1999, Zheda received 893 foreigners and over 1000 guests from HK, Macao and Taiwan, most of which are the world famous experts, some of them even the Nobel laureates such as doctor Fervid Mural M.D, the Nobel prize winner in medicine in 1998; Ding Zhaozhong, the winner in physics in 1976, and winner in economics in 1990 doctor William F. Sharpe, and so on.

There are co-operative research centers and institutes. Students Exchange is the main program that contributes to the inter-school communication. There have established friendly relationships among other universities, especially in Japan and European countries.

No needs for students to worry about their tuition fees for there are a set of perfect system supporting them. Various scholarships and awards, free loans, and for these students from poor families, they even have the chance to enjoy fee remission.

Students enjoy a fantastic campus life here. Technology is neck to neck with art. Science and Culture Festival provide a stadium for the young minds and Campus Association Festival brings all the talented students under spotlight.
