Wu Changshuo
Changshuo Wu (1844-1927) was the first president of Hangzhou Xiling Engravers Society. He was called Jun Wu at first and then Junqing Wu. Meanwhile styled himself changshuo. He was a great master in Modern inscriptions, calligraphy and paint. WuChangShuo, who lived in the era of the end of Qing Dynasty and the beginning of Ming Dynasty, was a leading artist of Hai Group and went through the fundamental changes. Though as a traditional scholar and painter he was interested in individual expression painting, Wu Changshuo created a lot of worldly paintings under the pressure of historic context of painting marketing. Set forth his viewpoint on how to reform the traditional painting in lots of poems, postscripts and letters, he formed explicit and integrates creative theory which was called “Endow Old with New” of painting.
