Ling Fengmian's former residence
Ling Fengmian (1900-1991) was one of the founders of China’s modern art education. He learned painting since six years old, went to study in France after graduated from middle school, and came back to China in 1928 to establish National Art Institute (precursor of China Academy of Art) in Hangzhou. In 1934, He designed and built this French style house, 2 storey, the entire area is 300 square meters. He lived in this house for ten years, and never came back here after he left Hangzhou in 1951. Since then, he suffered many mishaps in his life because of his persistence and pursuit of art education.
The first floor is the dining room, living room, and bedroom. The second floor is the painting room and sanctum, displaying the artist’s hangovers and duplicates of his artworks of different periods. In 1999, the municipal government spent 2 million CNY to remedy the house, and opened it to the public.
