Founded in 1899, the School had collected many well-known masters such as Mr. Lu Xun, Mr. Li Shutong, Zhu Ziqing and Ye Shengtao and had trained many civilized celebrities such as Mr. Xu Zhimo, Mr. Feng Zikai, Mr. Jinyong and Ms.Zhang Kangkang. Also, many scientific talents were from here, including Mr. Jiang Li fu, Mr. Chen Jianggong and Mr. Xu Kuangdi. Up to now, it has 42 domestic and foreign academicians amongst the schoolmates. The School is regarded as “the cradle for academician”.

 

In September of 1998, the general Committee member of the Politics Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Vice-Premier of State Councils, Mr. Li Lanqing, and the department director of education Department, Mr. Chen Zhili, inspected Hanghzhou Senior Middle School. In May 1999, the general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the national chairman, Mr. Jiang Zemin, wrote the epigraph for hundred years’ anniversary of Hangzhou Senior Middle School, as “paying attention to basic education and improving the virtue of the citizens”. Hangzhou Senior Middle School is a key middle school of Level 1 in Zhejiang province with the largest downtown and the largest scale.

As the education base for popular science in Hangzhou, the school aims to build a “Harmonious Campus, Humanistic Campus”. Now there are 28 associations and among them Astronomy Association and Literary Party the most well known. Ding Shushan was the first girl student having found the FMO in astronomy history; Yangyi, got the second prize in International Olympiad in Astronomy; Wang Jianyin, was listed in the academician in Chinese Youth Academy of Sciences.

It has set up friendly relation with schools from America, Germany, Japan, countries in southwest Asia and Europe.
